If your building has city garbage service (four units or fewer) and your timing fits your ward's collection rhythm, the city's bulky-item pickup is free — set the couch beside your cart or file a 311 request, and it's the cheapest legitimate route. The cheapest route with no eligibility test, no waiting, and nobody carrying a sofa down three flights of back stairs is a flat $126 pickup — loveseats $95, sectionals $141–$185 — from inside your unit.
The alley works sometimes — that's why the folklore exists — but upholstered furniture is its weakest category: rain reaches it before adopters do, and if your building is over four units the set-out is fly dumping regardless of intentions. Run the three-part test (building, timing, ward) before betting a deadline on the alley.
Donation pickups exist and are free when they work — but condition standards are strict (no rips, stains, pet odors, or broken frames), scheduling runs days to weeks out, and the crew can decline at the door.
